BOB FRANTZ excavates MONTY THE DINOSAUR — Part 1
LOOPHOLE COMICS: Hey, Bob Frantz!
BOB FRANTZ: Hello, and thank you for having me.
LC: Aren’t dinosaurs extinct? What’s with this Monty the Dinosaur?
BF: They are extinct… except in the hearts and minds of the children. I totally said that like NWA wrestling legend Dusty Rhodes. Did you get that? No? Bummer. Anywho… Monty the dinosaur is a creation of me and my lovely daughter, Sophie. Let me explain. We live in Cincinnati, Ohio. Our fair city is home to a wonderful museum that used to be a train station. That station, the Cincinnati Museum Center at Union Terminal, is the inspiration for the Hanna-Barbera Hall of Justice in the SuperFriends cartoon. Am I rambling? I have a tendency to do that. Sorry.
Anyway, the museum had an excellent dinosaur exhibit about a year ago. We went through the exhibit and Sophie loved it. She went Dino-CRAZY! On the way home, she asked me to tell a story about a dinosaur to her. BOOM! Monty was born. Sophie seemed to like the story and anytime we were in the car for longer than five minutes, Sophie would ask me to tell another story about Monty. Some were good, others not so much. The better ones I would write down with the idea of one day turning them into comics.
In May of ’14, I got the wildly awesome idea to actually make the comic book my daughter’s fourth birthday present. I was lucky enough to find the amazing artist Jean Franco on Digital Webbing and the project became a reality. So, basically, “Monty the Dinosaur” is a love letter to my little Sophie Lu.
what a great tribute you have the love of your children. Looks great!
thanks, mom!
